D.I.Y. Split Train Ticketing

It normally takes ten to twenty minutes to check all split ticketing options manually yourself but it’s worth doing if you have the time, especially for long journeys. If you do not have the time or inclination use the Spilt Ticketing automatic service above that should achieve the same result and saving you would from a manual search.
If you know the exact route your train takes and the timetable you can perform your own split ticketing exercise by following the these basic steps. You will need the correct information and the time to explore all ticket splitting options:-
Step 1:
Find the cheapest price for the standard journey or you won’t know if you can save. A good place to do this is at the Rail Easy train ticket reservation website.
Step 2:
Find out where the train stops using the Transport Direct journey planner; just click on the train icon after you receive your route to see the different stations where it stops. The info is also available via the timetables section of the National Rail website.
Alternatively, if your journey involves changing trains, try splitting your ticket at the station where you need to change trains.
Step 3:
Now pick a main station about half way across the journey and get a price for separate tickets to and from there for each leg. If that doesn’t work try another leg. If the train stops at many places then there’s a huge combination of available tickets. Obviously it’s a balance of time versus money. You could split a journey’s tickets into six or eight… it all depends on the amount of time you have.
One thing to watch for is the very rare event that your split ticket stop coincides with a place you may change train, If your first train were late and you’d booked a specific ticket, you may find your ticket isn’t valid for the last half of the journey.
or, better still just use the Split Ticketing engine at the top of this page to do all the work for you in a few easy steps.
Sneaky Train Fare Rises Can Be Minimised

On 09 May 2010 the rail watchdog, Passenger Focus, told the BBC that since last year rail fares have quadrupled in price. But what’s sneaky is that the fare prices have slowly increased unnoticed, due to a loop hole in how peak-time and off-peak fares are set.
With the general increases in running a motor vehicle, more people are using public transport and trains as a means of traveling to work on a daily basis, which is overcrowding off-peak train times. What the train companies have done is change off-peak train times into peak which doesn’t require authorization from the regulator ORR.
The rail companies aren’t actually doing anything wrong by changing or extending peak times, but the ticketing system is already confusing for passengers, many of whom were caught unawares by fare increases.
By properly researching all split ticketing options, or by using the automated Split Ticketing web facility at the top of this page, train passengers could minimise the impact of many train ticket price increases, especailly if they are able to delay or bring forward their planned departure or arrival times by a few minutes.
